Domesday Villages Walk - Saturday 2nd February

Post by Shamblers on Mon Jan 21, 2013 6:04 am

Description
Kiveton Meaning ‘settlement in the hollow’, this village has existed since the Doomsday Book of 1086
Todwick Our second Doomsday village, there has been a village here since the time of the Norman Conquest. The name has varied many times over the centuries, being called Taewic,Toddwyke and Todewyk.
South Anston Our final village on the walk appears in the Doomsday Book as Litelanstan, and is thought to
be an original Anglo-Saxon settlement. The name Anston is thought to mean ‘a stone’, and there has been a great deal of quarrying in the area, with one still operating in the present day.

Come along and visit these three ancient villages on this relatively flat walk which is packed with interest. You’ll also visit ancient lanes, open farmland and enjoy excellent far-reaching views on this straightforward route which uses easy to follow footpaths and bridleways.

Alan yes bring some lunch with you, the meeting point is:
Kiveton Bridge Railway Station
Kiveton Park
Sheffield
South Yorkshire
S31 8QP

The postcode that you mentioned S26 6NP sends you to Kiveton Park Railway Station (different station)

I really enjoyed meeting the Shamblers yesterday evening, and do have enough energy to walk 5 miles tomorrow. I'll meet you at Kiveton Bridge Station.
