Hope Valley Walk - Saturday 28th May

Post by Guest on Tue May 10, 2011 9:26 pm

For insurance, and common sense reasons, it is a requirement that people put their names down in advance if they intend to come on a Shamblers Walk.

Most of the walks from the Hope Valley involve strenuous climbs to the heights of Lose Hill or Mam Tor - and very fine routes they are too. This walk by contrast, traverses the slopes of the ridge below these hills and is almost entirely flat all the way. It runs across pastures and along tracks and includes a very pleasant stroll by a river at the start of the walk. The views are excellent, and it makes for a fine half days walk, taking in the villages of Hope and Castleton along the way.

Walk: Hope Valley circular

Date: Saturday 28th May

Start time: Meet at 12.45 for 1pm

Meeting point: Outside Woodroffe Arms in Hope, S33 6RB

Approx distance: 6 miles

Approx duration: 3 hours (or so!)

Route: Hope - Castleton along the river. Out of Catleton towards Mam Tor before turning round to return to Hope beneath Back Tor and Lose Hill

Terrain: Good paths and farmtracks throughout

Parking: Free on street parking in Hope if you arrive early enough, and have a drive round! Otherwise pay parking in car park in centre of village.

Refreshments: Hope and Castleton

Toilets: As above

Public transport: Let the train take the strain! £5.80 off-peak day return. Outbound train leaves Sheffield at 12.14, arriving at 12.39. Return trains at roughly half past the hour.

Walk Leaders: Scoobz, Billysmum

Additional information: If anybody is looking for a quick sprint through the valley - forget it! This will be a nice steady stroll, with plenty of stops, including a nice long one at Castleton. Weather permitting there may also be the chance afterwards for some serious socialising with the Walk Leaders Wink

IMPORTANT: Anyone joining the walk should be of a level of fitness relative
to the walk being undertaken, be appropriately dressed, have
suitable footwear, and have with them enough food and drink
for the duration of the walk.

If you are intending to join us on this walk, would you please post on this thread, so we know who to expect.

Just giving this a little boost in case anybody has missed the thread. The latest weather update is that it's going to be fine, so there's no excuse for anyone who is 'weather-watching'. Sweating it won't be, but at least we won't get wet!

The walk itself is really nice, and gives you a totally different view of the Hope Valley from 'down below' and by taking paths that are barely used. It should be a really nice way to spend a Saturday afternoon!

That was a lovely fun packed Saturday afternoon walk. The weather was kind to us, we had a refreshing stop at The George pub, a visit to a junk shop giving away Max Bygraves records, a nice leasurely walk, finished off by a beer festival, some singing and a free meal at the last pub! oops! not me Wont be going back to that pub for a while! lol

No photos today, sorry.

Last time I heard of anybody leaving a Chinese without paying, they ended up with a cleaver in their head! Chinese mafia don't muck about y'know! (Actually, can't blame you at all!).
Seriously good afternoon this was, topped off magnificently by us coming across a beer festival in Hope after the walk where the music was good, the company was great, and the beer was even better! So good in fact that we went back the following day to try the beers we'd missed after the walk.
Just seven of us on the walk who were Nooka, Vincentvega, Steve, Shirley, Billysmum, Scoobz and new walker Kate who I'd like to formally like to welcome to our humble group. Hope we see you again soon Kate.
